Genetic Carrier Screening FAQ
- What is Genetic carrier screening
Genetic carrier screening gives patients information regarding their chances of having a child with a genetic condition like cystic fibrosis (CF), fragile X syndrome (FXS) or spinal muscular atrophy (SMA)
- Who is eligible for Genetic carrier screening?
Genetic carrier screening is available to anyone who is pregnant, planning a pregnancy, and their reproductive partner
- Why should I consider Genetic carrier screening?
This genetic screening test looks for mutations causing three common genetic conditions: cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy and fragile X syndrome. Around 5% of people in Australia will carry a mutation for one of these conditions. One in 240 couples will both be carriers. These couples are at risk of having an affected child with reduced life expectancy.
- How much does it cost?
If you have not had genetic carrier screening done before, the test is fully medicare rebatable with no out of pocket fees with your local pathology centre. *Medicare criteria applies. The test for each condition is covered by Medicare ONCE in an individual’s lifetime.
- Can my partner be tested at the same time?
● Partner testing will not be covered by Medicare if it occurs before or at the same time as testing of the woman and will incur an out-of-pocket cost of approximately $350 (depending on the individual pathology collection centre).
● Carrier screening for cystic fibrosis (CF), spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), and fragile X syndrome (FXS) is bulk-billable for women who are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
● If you are found to be a carrier for CF or SMA, your partner can then be tested for that specific condition to determine your risk as a couple having a child with CF or SMA.
- What if results show that I am a ‘carrier’?
If this occurs, then testing of your partner is recommended to further clarify the risk of having a child affected with that condition
- How do I get tested?
● Genetic carrier screening involves getting a simple blood test at your local Pathology collection centre.
● We recommend that the female partner get tested first, followed by the male partner if required for cystic fibrosis or spinal muscular atrophy.
- When should I get tested?
The best time to have carrier testing is before pregnancy, if possible. This gives you the widest range of reproductive choices and allows more time to make important decisions. However, testing can still be performed during pregnancy, ideally before 12 weeks.
